Companionships

with Abbi Patrix in Le Heaume Normandy France

“Compagnonship, a network for the transmission of knowledge and skills,
as well as identities through the craft.”

(Definition inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity)

The storyteller is
a singular artist

Singular:

  • Someone who is distinctive, who is unlike others. A singular mind.
Which is rare.

  • Who is eccentric, who makes a point of standing out. He is singular in his opinions, in his language, in his manner of acting.

  • It also means extraordinary; that is a most singular fact, a singular adventure.

Storytelling is a plural art

The paradox of the storyteller is that they develop their singularity in order to share it with a community in a public act. A community of the moment with a wide-ranging audience, from children to adults, in homogeneous groups and in mixed audiences. Whether in an intimate space or on a stage, without some form of recognition from the audience, the storyteller does not exist.

He therefore constantly seeks a balance between the singular and the plural.

His art, too, is multifaceted. It is a skilful blend of writing, oral delivery, improvisation, adaptation, vocal projection, physical presence, and an understanding of space, sound and light. From intimate settings to performances, over the years, the storyteller builds a repertoire of tales forged through public experience, which becomes his voice.

To develop, the storyteller may choose to work in a group with peers and seek support in their growth.
The group then becomes a privileged space for nurturing one’s individuality within a collective and preparing for public speaking in a spirit of sharing.
A new form of art school is taking shape, where transgenerational and multidisciplinary approaches become essential.

It is this dual movement—singular and plural—that I wish to support.

From the very beginning, i thought Le Heaume would be a place of support. It allows me this independent and free approach, enabling me to support others and be supported myself. This approach is an exchange with other artists, other generations, other disciplines, without hierarchy but which recognises and builds on what each person can contribute to one another as they develop themselves and their art.

Mentorship is an artistic approach that resonates perfectly with the art of storytelling.

To accompany is not to direct; it is to seek together with rigour, constantly ensuring that the dual nature of the singular and the plural nourish one another in a fruitful movement.

The storyteller must be at peace with themselves; it is their stance and their commitment that they share with the audience. They take full responsibility for the substance and form of what they present; they perform wherever they go without a fourth wall and cannot hide behind anything.

Curiosity, experimentation, risk-taking, and an understanding of the languages at play in oral performance are all factors that cannot be learnt in isolation.

The other person is a generous mirror that helps deepen one’s art without being stripped of one’s personal artistic inspiration. This is the path to the storyteller’s freedom and creativity.
